Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the balloons.
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
